Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itchy eyes/nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. It works by blocking a natural substance (histamine) produced by the body during an allergic reaction. This drug also blocks another natural substance in the body (serotonin). This drug should not be used in newborns or premature babies.
Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 2 to 3 times daily. If you are using the liquid form of this medication, carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon as you may get the wrong dose.
The dosage depends on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. For children, dosage may also depend on weight and size. Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than directed.
Drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, constipation, or dry mouth/nose/throat may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water, or use a saliva substitute.
Remember that this medication is prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this drug do not experience serious side effects.
Tell your doctor right away if you experience any serious side effects, including: mental/mood changes (eg, irritability, confusion, hallucinations), shaking (tremors), difficulty urinating, fast/irregular heartbeat.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Before taking cyproheptadine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or other problems. Ask your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: breathing problems (eg, asthma, emphysema), high eye pressure (glaucoma), heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, epilepsy, seizures, stomach . Bowel problems (eg, ulcers, blockage), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), difficulty urinating (eg, enlarged prostate).
This drug may make you dizzy, drowsy, or have blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana may make you dizzy and drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. Avoid alcohol. If you use marijuana, talk to your doctor.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
Liquid products may contain alcohol and/or sugar. Caution is advised if you have diabetes, liver disease, or any other medical condition that requires you to limit/avoid these substances in your diet. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely.
Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug. This medicine usually makes young children restless rather than drowsy.
Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, confusion, or difficulty urinating. Drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion may increase the risk of falls.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk of serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. If you are taking other products that cause drowsiness such as opioid pain relievers or cough medications (eg, codeine, hydrocodone), alcohol, marijuana, sleep or anxiety medications (eg, alprazolam, lorazepam, oxazole), muscle relaxants (eg, carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine) or other antihistamines
(such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine), tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Check the labels on all your medicines (such as allergy or cough and cold products) because they may contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Ask your pharmacist how to use these products safely.
Do not use with other antihistamines applied to the skin (eg, diphenhydramine cream, ointment, spray) as side effects may increase.
This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests (eg, allergy skin tests, metyrapone test), possibly causing false test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and all doctors know you are taking this drug.
Symptoms of overdose may include: severe drowsiness, convulsions, dilated pupils. Children may experience mental/mood changes (eg, restlessness, irritability, hallucinations) before drowsiness occurs.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at your usual time. Don’t double your dose just to catch up.
Store in a dry and dark place at room temperature. Do not freeze the liquid form of this medication. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.
Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed otherwise. If this product has expired or is no longer needed, please discard it properly. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company.
