Marcq-en-Baroeul, France and East Brunswick, NJ — A retrospective study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) investigated the supplementation of vitamin B complex (5- in Gnosis of Lesaffre plus) Effects of methyltetrahydrofolate as Quatrefolic (vitamins B12 and B6) and folic acid (FA) on pregnancy outcomes (clinical pregnancy, miscarriage, and live birth) in infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART).
According to Lesaffre’s Gnosis press release, the finding: The Quatrefolic group had a higher chance of clinical pregnancy and live birth compared to those who only supplemented with folic acid.The study authors noted that more prospective studies and randomized clinical trials are needed to determine the role of the folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine pathways in improving pregnancy outcomes in women after ART.”If our findings are confirmed, this relatively inexpensive vitamin B complex supplement may be considered for clinical practice, especially in women receiving ART,” they added.
The study, conducted at the Center for Assisted Reproductive Technology at Careggi University Hospital in Florence, Italy, included 269 Caucasian women with an average age of 36.9 years.There were 111 women on daily supplementation with vitamin B complex (400 µg 5-MTHF, 5 µg vitamin B12, 3 mg vitamin B6) and 158 women on folic acid only (400 µg folic acid).
