Composition
Each 15 ml contains: Quinine dihydrochloride 3g equivalent to 2.44g quinine.
Indication
Quinine Dihydrochloride is indicated mainly in tension resistant plasmodium falciparum malaria. It is stated also as a muscle relaxant in myotonia congenita and myotonic contraction as well as nocturnal muscle cramps. A indication is its use in diagnostic test to myasthenia gravis.
Contraindications
Quinine and its salts are contra-indicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to quinine and in patients with tinnitus or optic neuritis and especially when this takes form of cutaneous symptoms angioedematous, visual, or auditory. Quinine should be stopped be avoided in patients with myasthenia gravis, as it can aggravate their condition.
Dosage and Administration
Children 2-6 years: 50mg/kg every 8 hours for 7 days.(NOTE: 20 drops =1 ml)
In severe or complicated malaria falciparum or when the patient is unable to take oral medication, quinine must be given parenterally, preferably by infusion intravenous slow but this can be dangerous, and patients usually need to monitor for signs of cardiotoxicity.
